What a @#$%ing eyesore ...
Damn ... that's a 1968 4001 ... with a big old sound sucking gibson pickup in it ....
But with a new pickguard and a new toaster ... it would be cool ...

Someone likes Gibson's. That ring around the selector switch looks like the one's they use on Les Pauls. It probably could be salvaged fairly easily though.

Neck joint (central blank-to-wings joint) is on the way out though. How does one go about repairing a separated neck/wing like that? One of mine could do with some work but I'm getting conflicting advice from luthiers as to the best method. 1)Inject glue? - 2)Internal pin? - 3)break, reglue, refinish (UGH!) There must be someone on here who has had the same issue on an old 4001 and had it invisibly repaired, I've previously had a '69 and a '74 with the same problem.

My 64 has the same problem too. It,s been like that for years, but the neck and fretboard at that point need to be seen to be believed...I,d be interested also in anyone else who has had this work done

I'd love the Cast bridge off this one, My 64 lost it's one sometime in the 70s (as they do) and now has a later rick bridge. Anyone got a spare cast bridge and tailpiece?

Gentlemen (ladies),
I once had this exact bass (sans "upgrades") and miss it dearly. I will be watching this one very closely. If all goes well, I may have another. Please stand by.

I think I mis-worded my previous post. I did not own this bass, but one that is identical in every way except with the proper toaster/thumb rest intact. I sold it about 15 years ago for $250 to pay tuition, this was before collector values took off. I am serious about trying to snag this one. All the mods are easily un-done and then it should be pretty nice. I hope I don't get in a bidding war with a fellow poster! Many eyes are on this one I'm sure.

I picked up my 1968 4001 in 1973 for $150!!!!
It came without a case and needed a setup and new strings ...
it's gotta be worth $3000 these days

So Wes, are you asking us to steer clear of it and let you have your shot at it?

Nope Steve, every man for himself. Anyone that's been around e-bay for a while knows how it works. In the last several days this thing will ratchet up pretty quickly once word is out. I predict $1200. Good luck y'all, I hope someone rescues it.

Oh, I know how Ebay works, trust me...I have been on there since '98, and have seen a lot of bizarre behaviour on there. I would love to have it, just wish it wasn't so heavily modded. LOoks like it will need a new pickguard, new toaster, as well as the wiring and the routing. I am just a sucker for the full-width inlays and the checkered binding. Re-issue, PLEASE!
