20 frets

I recall some talk in this thread about 21 and 22 fretted Ric basses, and I didn't jump in then, so now, I would like to ask a question. It seemed some of you preferred 21 over 22 frets. Can you tell me why? Also, were some 4001's 20 frets? What year(s)? Tanks.

I don't think there were actually any 22 fretted rics, but there are some 21 fretters about.
Nearly all 4001's are 20 frets, but I think from what I've read in these forums a few 21 fret 4001's were made in the early 70's.
I don't know any more that that ,but there are people here that will know so I'll leave it to the experts to explain more

So I got it backwards. The 21's are more desireable over the 20's? Reason?

My guess would be rarity. Personally I think they should all be 21 fret, why be one note shy of three octaves.

Exactly. If you have a high E, you'll be tempted to use it every now and then, whereas you'd have to be playing in a flat key to think about the high Eb.

Yeah, I'll be totally satisfied with 21 frets. I don't want much, but please give me 4 E's.
In fact, I just encountered the "wish my baby had 21 frets" situation when writing a song the other day. I needed that high E!!!

You won't see a 24 fret 4003 ... because the neck pickup is placed right where the 24th fret would be ...
