I don't see too many people talking about these basses. I know they are expensive, but I was wondering if anyone here has one and whether or not they think it is worth the price tag.

It is basically the same bass as the v63 except it has a backwards headstock and a bigger price tag ... as for me I'd rathed have a v63 ... also those rounded horns don't look good ...

now if they made a 5 string or 8 string version I'd get really intetested ...

Rick,
Check out the Thread for "Rickenbacker "C" Series". You'll probably find a lot more information about them there. While I would generally agree with Jeff's comments, I think the C64 was designed to be as close to Paul McCartney's bass as possible on the day he got it, so there might be some other differences between it and a v63. I've played one, and I'd say they are definitely very nice and well worth the money...IMHO.
Jeff just doesn't like them because they don't have 5 strings! ;~)

Aren't they a close to Mac's as it is today (after his changes and factory refurbs, etc.?)

I thought the C64 was the "before" model, and the C64S was the "after" model(with the shaved horn, etc.). At least that's the way I thought it was...

I'm not much for the re-issue c and v series because I have a REAL 1960's Rickenbacker ... the re-issue models are nice basses ... but what would I do with another 4 string bass ... the one I have now sits in a case under a bed ...

Jeff, did you see my post over in Rickenbacker General? Its under "When did Rick drop the w in glo" or something like that. Anyway, someone pointed out that the 1968 catalog says that all 4000 series basses have 21 frets. Since I think you are one of the few here with a 1968 4001, I was wondering if your bass has 21 frets. I did check the 1968 catalog on the Rick official site, and it DOES say that, but I didn't think that 1968 basses had 21 frets. If I recall correctly, you and dedgoat are the only ones here with '68 model basses.

My '68 has 20 frets ...

I'll look in the general section

The basses pictured in the 68 catalog have 20 frets. It's probably a typo.

My '67 4005WB only has 20 frets.

The C64 and C64S are the same bass. The "S" stands for Sanded which is the color. At least that is what I've been told. McCartney sanded down his 4001.

The "S" also adds a zero fret next to the nut as does Paul's as well as a matte sealer only Mapleglo (non-glo!) finish. The non-"s" does not have these features, but both have the reverse headstock.
