Solo "acoustic" Rick 12 setup

Post by profjeff »

Hello Friends:

I want to share with you a fun setup that I have been using for solo gigs using my 360/12. The sound is really unique--yet simple to achieve--and it yields a full, rich sound to accompany my challenged vocals. I have my 360/12 VP running through my new Aphex Guitar Exciter and a Boss Digital Reverb into a Fender Pro Junior (1 x 10, Celestion Tube 10 speaker, 2x EL 84's). The trick is to blend the pickups to create an almost acoustic sound (yet very Rickish!). I turn the neck pickup volume up full and set the tone control at 3/4. The bridge pickup is turned up 2/3, and the tone is at 1/2. The blend knob is set so it favors the neck pickup slightly. The tone control on the amp is at 1/2, but the volume needs to be kept fairly low. For small coffee house gigs there is plenty of volume, but you could mike the amp if needed. This combination has worked great for me. You could substitute the Aphex with a compressor to tighten up the bass a bit (subtlety is the key). I've tried the same settings through a number of amps including my Fender Deluxe (1 x 12) and Vox AC 15, but the 10" speaker in the Pro Jr. seems to provide the best balance from bass to treble. Any other suggestions of interesting solo settings? BTW: Thanks for all of the suggestions of songs (another thread). I might start leaving my Martin at home soon!

On a related note, has anybody ever used any of those acoustic simulator stompbox pedals?
