The Church

Post by jwilli »

Cool! I was just surfing channels when I saw a nice FG '67 340 being played. It was Marty Willson-Piper from The Church. The next video (it was a two-fer) he was playing one of the 390s from the RIC museum. The song was "Under The Milky Way". The song was cool and the guitar was, again, featured. The Smithereens had a video where this guitar was featured. Maybe it was "Blue Period" with Belinda Carlisle?

The other guitarist, the ultra-talented Peter Koppes plays my good friend Rod C's '65 Ric 365 in their current video for Song In Space. Sure, John, the Church video canon is a travelogue of wonderful guitars, many of them rare Rickies. The 390 is a '48 I believe. Lovely! MWP has owned many fine Rickenbackers and has held onto his 370/12RM and an early 60s Capri.
Great band. Cheers, Noel *seeing them in Chicago at the House of Blues on March 13

Here are some great pictures of a recent Church gig in Atlanta. Ric is well represented. You can download some video clips of the concert too.

I was at the show. Marty used his 370/12RM on a third of the songs. On 'Nothing Seeker' he plucked gorgeous octaves on it...
Yes, a great band. Saw them in Chicago a few days ago as well.

The Church just played here last week at a very intimate club. Marty and the band were great/authentic.
In a perfect world they would be opening for The Cure
with Simon ONLY playing his RIC.

I saw the church back in 1989 and 90 and I have to admit to loosing my xxxx when I saw MWP come out with that dot neck, F hole, Rose Morris 12 string...the Ac-30s didnt hurt either...
Steve Kilby was playing a really cool greenish blue, Hollow body Fender Bass and Peter Koppes was playing Jags and Jazzmasters...good stuff...
at first MWP came out with that Shergold (Burns?? Hayman??) Tele looking 12 string and he was having trouble with it, seems like he threw it down at some point, he was ****** at it...
I never saw him do that with his Rick.

Tom, What model was that bass? I don't remember any hollow body Fender basses except for the new acoustic ones. (it's probably something I've seen a million times and am just spacing on)

I believe Elvis has been pictured with a 6 string Coronado around '68, maybe played one on his TV comeback special

Steve's right, it's a Fender Coronado. They were pretty bad basses., long-scale, bolt-on neck hollow body.

I'm on the "Churchlist", the Church's e-mailing list. Marty Wilson-Piper is doing a series of small solo shows with "special guests", starting in NYC and coming over here (McCabes). If time and tide permit, I do believe I'll see him.

According to the latest "Churchlist" emailing, MWP is selling three of his guitars, including a '68 Ric w/3 pups, vibrato and slash soundhole. 2500 pounds, located in Liverpool. The other two aren't Rics.

I saw the Church late last year at the House of Blues in Chicago and MWP only played a Rick for two of the songs.

That said, every one of you should check out their latest acoustic disc. It's great.

And he completely de-strung it through force! I was there. Felt sorry for whoever had to restring it. It's better than going completely Townshend I suppose.

It's funny, you look at Peter Koppes' rig and his pedals are lined up like the Terra Cotta Army. His amps, cables, and guitars are immaculate. It looks as if Marty dumped his gear out of a bag, plugged it all together, and started playing.

Very cool show in retrospect. '52 Tele, 370/12RM, '66? Jazzmaster, PK's Strat, Dearmond baritone, nylon-strung classical....

Love the Church.
