Is this a fretless S? Does it have binding?. Another terrible photo auction.

It says it is fretless...at least it looks like it in the pictures! I'll defer to those who know more than I!

It's a normal 4001 Fretless. Pretty much like a 4003 FL but with the old rod system.
Here's a 4003 FL FG:

The earliest 4001 fretless that I know of are Bob Young's Jetglo and my Mapleglo Dec. '72. Only one serial number in between. 4001 fretless basses were custom order items back in the early '70s.

Here's mine:

Chris Brubeck also has an early '70s 4001 FL MG.

Hi, Paul. Thanks for the above link. Chris Brubeck's fretless 4001 is older than I thought. Very interesting. Recently I found a mint vinyl copy of New Heavenly Blue's 1972 album, wherein Brubeck's playing and tone are totally awesome.
Can't say I like the JB pickup in the above shot, though...

I think that's the one that was in last week without a picture, he mentions that the blue book value is $4000.00 it is also the same year, at least the price is reasonable now, looks like a nice bass.

Notice the bound headstock and the unusually wider 'skunk' stripe on Brubeck's 4001, exactly like those on James Grove's '21 fret' (originally fretless) 4001, according to JH not a real Rick!

I was wondering about that wide stripe on Brubeck's bass, seems rather odd, especially considering that it is supposed to be a 1969 model...

I think this bass was also discussed in a thread dentitle "Bluebook" or something like that.

What the...well anyway, Chris Brubeck's bass looks to have a "20 fret" position for the bridge.

If I post the distance from the bridge rout, (filled in) will that be something that can be translated into the position of an original bridge? I'm assuming Chris Brubeck still has that bass -- anyone know? I've had mine since '83.

Filled area from 2.25" from the end to roughly 3.75" from the end. fwiw, I sent off an email to Chris Brubeck with a couple pics. Could be a while I suppose. I noticed that his headstock appears to be veneered with one piece of walnut and he's replaced the truss rod cover with a blank one.
