One of those listings he mentions(CS#22) was rather "strange" IMHO... I believe it was relisted within a few days of the close of the auction, and was put up for sale with the exact same description under it, just a different seller.

Canadian fish... Check out the sellers past auctions, mostly small dollar items to quickly build feedback, I'd avoid this one like the plague.

A very nice picture of the bass directly on the wood floor, out of the case, with no protection.

I never heard about the quality suffering after 700. Any truth to that?

Not really, in fact some people actually prefer the later models over the early ones. They all share the same staining and being prone to chip easily. One thought though, Ric always makes extras to cover warranty repairs, what's going to happen to the left over 4001CS after the warranty period ends?

Bottom Line if he's for real, he'll probably get the 4K for it. The #22 was sold. The second auction was phony and stopped,but the one that was sold had several bidders over 4K.

Keep in mind that Matt from Counting Crows drives the market a little because he's willing to shell out the money so if anyone else wants it, they have to go higher.

I read somewhere about neck problems with the early CS models. Anyone else heard about this?

Funny thing is that i almost bought one off of ebay before I bought my v63. I didn't want it because it had a signature on the pickguard. I guess I could have just changed that.

One of my goals in life is to not own an overpriced 4001cs ...

Buy 2 new 4003's, a V63, and have the V63 refined to look like a CS and still be money ahead.

Raising the bar indeed. I have to say that I have received emails from a number of folks this past while who were desparate to get a 4001CS and expressed a willingness to pay considerable dollars for the same.

My critique of this ad is the photos. If you expect to get somewhere near $5000 and go to all the trouble of a write up, to my way of thinking, excellent photos are the order of the day. Just my two cents.

My 4001CS is number 430 (manufactured May 20, 1992, has a couple of small finish discolorations on the upper horn and some of the paint is chipping on the horseshoe surround. You think I could get about six grand for it?

Seriously,it seems to me that these sellers are just trying to make a buck, without any regard to individuals who actually play these instruments instead of buying them in the hope that this "investment" will pay for junior's college tuition in 10 years. It doesn't help matters either that there are some people out there (with the the exception of Matt of the Counting Crows) who are stupid enough to buy them at those insanely inflated prices. I paid $2000 for mine in December 2002, and I thought that was too much. Little do I know... . I have no problem with people trying to make a little money, but let's use some common sense. It still kills me to know that I could have had a new 4001CS five years ago for under a grand! (hits head on desk several times)

Man, don't I know about that Ron! I ordered a v63 back when the CS was still available, and it was actually LESS than a new v63, not much less but still less... I had my heart set on a Mapleglo v63, which is essentially what Squire played until the time of the Yes Album or Fragile tours, and so I got the v63... In a way I'm glad I did it this way tho, because I might be tempted to "cash out" on the CS, where I'm not with my "lowly" v63... Then after I got a v63 I found a CS in a Guitar Center (#66 or #68, can't remember which) and I put down a couple hundred to hold it, but I needed an amp upgrade at the time, so I finally had them apply the downpayment to a speaker cab. This one had paint chips right at the bridge, but was otherwise pristine, and it played and looked so cool! Oh, hindsight!
