I really like that bass too, I guess it's time to start selling plasma!

The neckjoint routing scares me, I once read somewhere that these basses were to be avoided. I don't remember which thread it was though.

I have a lefty '80 set-neck 4001S. It gigs at least once a week all over Texas(and beyond..).
I have never had ANY problem with it.

Yes, I wrote that on the earlier thread for this bass. I heard that from one of the folks at Rickenbacker. I have a set-neck 4000, and while I enjoy it, it's just not the same as a neck-through. Not the same richness and sustain. I've considered routing out for a neck pickup, but I worry it would seriously compromise that joint....

I don't know anything about them other than the 4000 that I have, which is another long irritating story.

Has that joint gone bad on yours?

No, nothing like that. I had it on ebay a few weeks ago, made a local deal and the guy never appeared with the cash. I should have known better, but at the time it was a good deal. I'm going to complete the refinish and probably relist it later this spring.

Dedgoat,
Is your 4000 a complete bass or just a body/neck carcass?

I hear you...I got semi-burned on a non-functional Wurlitzer, my first truly bad eBay experience. Sigh.
What vintage is the 4000? I'm always looking for stray dogs and projects....
Best,
Seth

It's a complete 73 4000. I have a new black Don Adamek pickguard and new Ric trussrod cover, new Ric tuners, and a schaller bridge and a NOS horseshoe. I'm going to refinish it jetglo.

If you decide not to go through with the refin yourself, please let me know. I've been looking for a basket case 4000 or 4001s in the affordable range. I'm just finishing up a 3000 rebuild and a Kustom K200B that I Rickenized.

Thanks but it's not really a basket case, and I'm intent on completing the work.
