I just bought this book and in one way I'm very happy with it, but on the other hand I'm a bit dissapointed with it, because of the type of paper that it's used and because of the typical old typemachine lettering. Altough it's just the paperback I found that the used material is very very poor not at all like the rickenbacker guitars!!! But the information in the book is SUPURB. And in the end that is what count.

That is a very interesting and helpful book....another one that you will find to be very informative and useful is "The Rickenbacker Book" by Tony Bacon and Paul Day. It is a hardcover book--the layout is very nice and the photos are all in full color; the only thing I don't like about is is that it only covers electric guitars, not basses or acoustics.

I think it's time for a new Smith book, revised to include more 70's models basses and more basses in general, isn't that book from 1986? I have it but it's very far from me right now, I have both, I liked Smith's book better as I'm a bass player.

I agree, there's nothing about the 4003/360 SPC runs, the V63's CS's the list goes on and on. Time for a updated version.

With corrections to the older material!

Smith and the publisher don't see eye to eye- I have no hope for a revision. Also, I think he fancies himself as a curator rather than a writer these days.
But maybe someone else will take up the challenge.

How about Kenny?
Actually, with RICs 75 anniversary aproaching, perhaps RIC could hire someone to do a book to celebrate the occasion. Would that be more realistic than an anniversary forum edition bass?

I would rather Ric publish something, I can only imagine the photos they have on file, plus the addition of factual information directly from the source would be great. But I suspect that since they're in the instrument business that's not a important issue, however it would make a great research project for someone, I wish I had the time.

How about Kenny?
I'd prefer to have this written in English.

Maybe I'm saving all the good photos and stories for the book I could write in retirement . . .

A great idea here. As people have stated already, alot of history and new discoveries have taken place since the Smith book was first published.
I'm sure JH has quite a few good tales tucked away that would fit well with the wealth of information that he and others could offer up in a definitive work. The slides that F.C. Hall took through the years could be a book in their own right.
IMHO,a new definitive work on Rickenbacker would generate as much anticipation and enthusiasm as the introduction of a new line of Rickenbacker instruments.
The time is right, gentlemen.

I was going to mention that, but I didn't want to say anything about retirement, we'll have none of that.

Take the ideas above, and add the Rittor book as an appendix- I've still never seen a copy.

If this book is ever be seriously considered, I'd like to offer my services in producing good b&w photographs from any negatives on file with RIC. I run a custom b&w photo lab (Paul Yan has seen some of my work).
