I'm wondering if somehow we can't put together our resources to produce a more accurate guide of what Rickenbacker basses are selling for.

I know we have the appraisal area but, that only gives you an opinion on an individual basis. What I'm referring to is a web only reference of recent sales and market values. Also, there should be a better break down of transitions and colors than we see in the Vintage Guitars Price Guide.

Who knows? If there's enough interest, it could actually need to be printed on a quarterly basis.

Sounds like a great idea.

I'll volunteer to do the web design and server space if it flies.

Well I sure I can add some, but someone like Simon Mole takes the prize for "Way too many basses". Have you seen his collection on Rickbeat?

Marc, I'd volunteer some time for such a project. I think I may have posted something in this vein in an earlier thread, but don't have time right now to look for it.

dedgoat, do you have a link to that site? Also, is Simon a bass player? The reason I ask is that I am not a 'real' bass player but still have about a dozen RIC basses in my collection (do 4080s count?)!

The way prices have been rising lately it would be obsolete very quickly, all you have to do is check Ebay everyday, you'll see the trends. I think Ebay is setting the prices nowadays, I am sure most dealers do the same and price their stuff accordingly. I don't think this is just a Ric phenomenom either. Old SVT's have taken off lately too.

....Walk into any pawnshop or even some "used" guitar stores , chances are, if you see a computer behind the desk, it will have the 'bay colors flying.....

I too have noticed the computer/ebay thing happening around here as well. but I still get calls about Rics from a few shops, a lot of dealers don't know them as well as Fenders it seems.

Remember one thing, Ebay sales are still isolated and individual. The idea of a price guide is to inform generally what the item is selling for. On Ebay, private sales,guitar shows,shops etc.If you're saying that Ebay has the largest influence on the volatility, I'll agree.

The other thing is that there are transitional years and upgrades available which affect value.The guide should be educational as well as value informative.

I was at the NE Ohio Vintage Guitar Show this past weekend with my '67 4005WB. I got a LOT of interest in it from the dealers and others wandering around. They all wanted to buy it! One guy was ready to part with $5000.00 cash for it. And the bass is far from mint condition. So use that as a starting basis for the 4005s.

What I find frustrating with price guides is the cases where they are so far from market prices. For example Ric 4002 bass, Ric Susanna Hoffs, John Kay, etc. On some guitars they are consistently out of range on what appears to be the going price for the guitar. But then maybe I'm just not aware of the instances where these sell at the listed price.

If that's the case, then I'm ready to trade my '67 4005 for a few other rics!

I'd keep it for a while longer, maybe it will just keep climbing!
