The bass arrived today, FEDEX just dropped it on the doorstep and took off, (that's nice) It dates to June 98 but there's a sticker in the control cavity that gives 3/21/98, I'm assuming that's the assembly date? Cosmetically it isn't as excellent as the auction stated, but I've had worse.
I took it apart and cleaned everything, it's clear that the bass has never been set up, the rods needed a little tightening and the bridge was way high but it all adjusted perfectly, infact this bass has the lowest action of any Ric I've ever owned.
So in the end it cleaned up nicely, and sounds very aggressive( the horseshoe measured 13ohms) it has it's "player mojo" but it's a keeper!

Glad it turned out ok, Kendall! Ebay can be quite the "no mans land".....but this sounds like a keeper! Congrats!!

I'm starting to think I may be wierd! Cosmetics really don't matter much to me(within reason obviously; that "Van Halen" 4001 on e-bay is beyond the pale,and I like Van Halen!). In fact IMHO a little wear and tear adds character. As long as it plays well and sounds good I'm happy! "Out-of-the-box" basses I kind of struggle with; I'm always scared to really play them!

It all depends on what you're going to do with the instrument, I still gig, but I also collect, so small inperfections aren't a problem. The problems arise when a seller states that "item a is in excellent condition", that doesn't include gouges and heavy scratches in my book. But in this case the bass was under market value and a little work turned it into a very nice bass.

I'm with you! I tend to lean toward the "orphans" myself, fix them up and make them look as good and sound as good as they can, then take em out and grind on them!
