I hadn't planned on buying a new bass until I bought a 1981 Rickenbacker TR35B bass amp. The amp sounds so clean and robust that I imagined playing the Real Deal through the Real Deal. I found the Real Deal in the local newspaper, called the owner, and was the proud new owner that night. This beauty is in wonderful condition for being 13 years old. I'm the second owner of this beauty. I can see where I read about how you know you are a Rickenbacker Addict. I wish I knew how to put a picture of it on this thread.

Congratulations Dave - Was the real/ Rael ( sorry about the genesis thing) bass a 4001 or 3? I still own/ stoled my older brothers Transonic . My 21 yr old son digs it and often prefers it over many other amps.... even with that 5 string thing compulsion. How cool is it to get older and still create and revel in a sound?

It's been a while, but when I saw "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" Tour, I don't beleive Mike Rutherford was playing any Rickenbackers.

It has been a while... combined with altered states...but when I saw them it was the first time I had ever seen or even knew about the double neck 4001/620 12 string. Rutherford was all over it with tasty melodic chops. It was the "Selling England by the Pound' era.... I think. That music has stood the test of time.

I think I'm completely wrong about Rutherford and Ric. My bubble just burst. Shergold guitars?

I don't know if I missed part of this conversation, but Rutherford played Ricks up to and including Selling England. I believe he played a Microfrets on Lamb, and then moved on to Shergold for the remainder of what I consider the classic years(and from there to Alembic, then Steinberger etc). Mike has been a BIG influence.

"The Lamb lies down on Broadway" was not a Ric bass? Pretty damn good impersonation then. And the thing is you never really know what someone might have used in a studio on any given day. For ex. Jimmy Page played Les Pauls onstage and supposedly always played Teles in the studio.
I went to a studio once when I was a kid with a Hofner and the engineer didn't like the sound and borrowed a Gretsch from a friend of his, I played it throughout the whole album. Now if I were famous and known for my Hofner basses, everyone would think that the bass was a Hofner, and that was the only time I ever played a Gretsch bass in my life, it was a nice bass BTW.

I saw Genesis on the "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" tour ... he was playing his ric .... I think it was the custom double neck that was similar to the 4080 ... he may have played a 4001 as well ... circa 1974/75 Chicago ... since I was playing a Ric at that time I would notice such things ...

Like I said, it's been a while. I do recall some other bass that I was unfamiliar with, might have been the Trick Of The Tail tour. It does get fuzzy as I have seen them a bunch of times since their first US tour as an opening act for It's A Beautiful Day in April '72 through the Wind And Wuthering tour.

I do remember the double neck going back to the Foxtrot era (album, not dance), but if I recall, the guitar neck was above the bass neck, as I always felt it should be.

Hello All. I've been reading these posts for a long time and have enjoyed everyone's imput. It's refreshing to see the passion that exists for Rickenbacker basses,(me included).Being a huge Genesis fan I thought I'd add my 2 cents about Mike Rutherford.He played a beautiful fireglo 4001s(1999) in the very early years and did play 2 differnt Rickenbacker double necks live, up through and including the Lamb tour. A 4080 and also a 6 string /12string doubleneck.The 1976 Trick Of The Tail Tour saw him playing a custom 6 string/ 12 doubleneck where he had the 6 string tuned down an octive,and may have been the first,or one of the first to play 6 string bass. This "bass "had normal string spacing.1977 saw him playing his custom Shergold 4 string/12 string double neck.

Thanks for the info, Joseph! I love "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", and though I am not old enough to have seen them back then, I have seen a lot of pics of Mike playing these basses/guitars, I mostly remember the Shergold. I'll have to see if I can find some pics of the Rics!
