I would consider this a sign of a good bass that was played a lot. I don't like sweat damage, rust, gunk, or sticker residue, but an honest buckle rash is fine with me, as long as it's not too deep into the wood.

This bass was up for sale last year at about the same BIN price. No one bit through the auction. When the bass Mark bought came up, I thought that it was this bass until I went back and looked at the old pics. I,m tempted, and still need a player. It would be a twin for my 68 F/G 4001...

If the buckle rash were half the size, would it be worth $1899? Slightly better than that, $2099?
IMO, it's worth $1199, mint $1599. The way I see it, "it is what it is, nothing more".

Everyone has a different value system. IMO even though it's a 73, it has "the features". Full with inlays, split bridge, checkboard binding, grovers. that makes it a pre-transition bass. If it plays and sounds nice, it's worth the money. In mint, it would fetch $2500 easy.At $1199 I would purchase as many as I could.

"it has the features" I think this is the main issue. A couple of months ago I was offered a 73' MG with a hi gain. Now, you have to understand that used Rics are not a common sight in Israel. Still, I let it pass for not having all "the features" but mainly because I wanted (needed?) a C64...

To me, it's all in the comfort of the neck and the sound. They're the tools I use to go out and have fun playing music. I'd sooner sink $1000 into a Lakland JO Skyline Jazz bass because it'll get me further than wide inlays, split bridge, and checkerboard binding, but that's just me. I'm also not much of a collector, can't see buying things I won't have the time to play.
Two players are about all I can handle, since I only get out to jam once every 6-8 weeks. If my friends were local, it'd be weekly.

A cool April 73 B/G in VG+ went for $1800 a couple of months ago...way better than this one. No rash or anything. I,ve held back because I think it is overpriced, and this is the same $$$$ the guy wanted last time with no takers. This was a high output time and there are quite a few basses from this period and 72 around, and I still think anything above $2K is too much. One can afford to be patient, although, as ever the want exceeds the need!! I have a April 73 F/G FL that is close to this in serial number and it is a great fireglo finish...I,ll sit and watch for a few days. Incidentally, the 72 I had from New York has been returned, so if anyone here wants to try and work on that neck bow, step up and have a go at it...

I would never buy a bass with buckle rash like that, I can not for the life of me figure how anyone could do that to a bass. I have done many things to basses in my life, including sliding one down the cellar stairs onto the concrete floor below but I have never worn a belt while playing, or if I did I would put the buckle off to the side, got a lot of comments about that. I wouldn't pay more than $700.00 for that. There are many sins I will forgive on a bass, but that is the worst one to me. That is not an accidental thing like banging your headstock into the ceiling, that is long term deliberate defacement, should be punishable by banishment from any contact with rickenbackers for an indeterminant amount of time decided by a Ric tribunal.
