String wear and intonation?

It just occurred to me that string wear can theoretical change one's intonation over time to a noticeable degree, especially if ya play a lot in certain parts of the fretboard. Is this a measurable phenomenon? If so, do y'all find it to be a big deal? Is this an argument in favor of a more durable type steel string over a nickel string (Which I personally prefer)? Does this have any impact at all upon the deeper questions of life? Enquiring minds want to know!

That's right....steel strings will gnaw a slot in the frets....pretty quick too as the frets are softer than you might think.
