Mark,
It's me again. Topic is pickups again, but this time on my 1997 reissue. It's from the late 80's and of course has the toaster pickups. While looking at the poles for ideas on the 480, I noticed both pickups' base plates are warping downward, separating themselves from the chrome top covers, though flush in contact at the ends where they are bolted. Looking closer, the black plastic top covers under the chrome have now shifted out of place.

I am the original owner and have never touched these pickups in any way, have never stored the guitar in adverse conditions, and the pickups still sound fine. In fact, it's my main guitar. I've just never noticed it until I looked under the pickup. Is this typical? Can it be corrected and how? Does it need to be (cosmetically, I do need to fix the the black plastic)?

Normal ,totally normal.

If it bothers you ,loosen the 4 corner screws...reposition the coil, retighten the 4 screws.

I'll bet it has been like this since day one ...you just now have noticed this.

Not this bad. There was always a very slight gap, but not to this degree. I just noticed it a while ago that it was quite big, and the plastic cover was never out of alignment until I looked closely. I guess the straw finally broke the camels back!
Thanks.
