This model, a 420 in reality, has had quite a history. You can read about it from the time it was purchased until its present day apprearance at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio in an article entitled You Won't See Me.

Peter - If you take a close look at the neck position toaster p/u, you'll see that the hole cut to accomodate the pick-up is actually quite larger than the hole for the bridge p/u. I've seen the guitar at the R&R Hall of Fame. If you see it close up, you can tell the pick-up was a add-on.
My personal opinion is that who ever installed the neck position toaster p/u, made a shoddy job of cutting the hole in the pickguard for it. No manufacturer would let a instrument leave their factory looking like this one does today, it would be rejected for sure. But wouldn't it be nice to own this piece of history today!
Cheers,
