Annoyances with BackBeat -- The Movie

I'm pleased to say that I saw BackBeat at the movies all those years ago and over the following years on video.

I've recently watched the DVD version a few times lately, and I think the movie is holding up very well. My only annoyances are:

* The scriptwriters obsession with working Beatles lyrics into dialogue. The one that really grates, as a Beatles fan, is when they have Lennon utter, "a hard day's ****ing night..." I could just about cope with everything else, so long as they didn't have Lennon utter this line, giving casual viewers and fans the impression that he made it up.

* Sheryl Lee, as Astrid, doesn't hold up well for me. It might be the wig.

Apart from that, I think the movie is pretty darn near perfect Image

What do you guys think of the film?

Haven't seen it for a while, but yeah, any Fab fan knows A Hard Days Night is a Ringoism. But S. Lee, IMHO, was quite right for the part of Astrid, strong resemblance. Babe-alicious. Great movie overall.

My friend Don played lead guitar on the soundtrack!

Did he? What a legend! That's a great soundtrack. Nice and rough and raw. My only disappointment was that they didn't include the Henry Rollins 'Love Me Tender' on it. Also, I like some of the Don Was music, but I'm not sure if that was ever released. I know I've got one of the Was tracks on the 'Money' single that was released here, but there was a lot more than that in the film.

The soundtrack gave me a fresh look at the way that sort of early rock could/should be delivered...

It always bugged me that the Lennon character had his strap attached to the neck heel rather than the usual place.
Otherwise I really love it, got it on VHS.

No. Well, the Australian release, at least. It doesn't even have a damn trailer. Very disappointing in that respect.

One of the errors in the movie BACKBEAT that has always bugged me was George's guitar in the famous Astrid pix. How in the world the producers could have come up with one that had 6-in-line tuners (ala Fender style) instead of 3-3 is BEYOND ME. I've been emotionally scarred every since seeing that and even massive doses of real Beatle lore cant erase it from my mind. I can forgive the modern humbucker pickups on Stu's bass, but George's guitar is a travesty.
