I heard a strange story the other day from someone who was ordering a Rickenbacker guitar.
He was told by the Dealer that although they has a list price for it, they would not be able to confirm the actual cost until the guitar arrived – 12 months from the order date(!)
Apparently this has something to do with the Dealer not getting price protection.

Surely the Dealer must know what they are paying when they order it from the Distributor and subsequently the Distributor must know what they are being charged by Rickenbacker?

Has anyone else heard of this?

Utter baloney. Tell your friend to run away from that deal. Better yet, email me the name of the dealer so we can have a chat with them (assuming it's even an authorized dealership).

Orders for goods are shipped at the price agreed at the time of order just like any other typical business purchase order scenario.

Robert, unfortunately it was not apparent from your post that you're in the U.K.

In this circumstance, from our standpoint, our customer is Rosetti, the distributor, rather than your dealer directly. We will honor the purchase order at the quoted price just as I said- to Rosetti in U.S. dollars. That's where the problem is since no one has any idea what might happen as far as currency exchange rates. As a result they may well be unable to guarantee a final price to the dealer.

I believe under most circumstances there would be little possibility of change. However, it wasn't so many years ago that "endaka" hit literally overnight where the Japanese Yen became twice as expensive, so I've learned to never say never.
