RIC Pickup Question

What is the purpose of the gromets mounted under the pickups on my 660? I've never seen anything like this used on any other manufacturer's pickups.

They help align the magnetic field of the planet to increase the jangle. Yours came with a compass, right?

They also act as springs for adjusting the pickup height as did the ones on vintage Rickenbackers of yore.
