I'll soon be receiving an old Rickenbacker amp. The tolex, grille cloth, and handle all appear to be in good condition. Only set back is: no speaker. It is said to be a M8 model. But looking at the schematics at the RIC web site, the tube complement makes me think I'm getting the M8E amp.

In either case, am I looking at a 3.2-ohm speaker?

Well... anybody???

Andrew: Sorry for the delay but I was waiting for Tracy Sands to respond. In the meantime, I would go with a 4 ohm speaker, unless you forsee using an external speaker cabinet. Should you wish to use an external cabinet then I would go for an 8 ohm speaker. The interesting issue is the make of speaker that you may choose. Please post when you have added the speaker and give us a full report.

Well, it may be a question that doesn't need answering after all. Things have gotten ugly. The amp was won on an e-Bay auction. Between the end of the auction and now, the seller has suddenly received a whole bunch of negative feedback and is no longer a registered user. I'll give it another couple of days (making it an official 30 days since the end of the auction) before I take advantage of e-Bay's insurance.

What makes it worse is right after I sent my payment, a clean M88 amp (speaker included) went on auction. It's like an M8, but has a tone knob to complement the volume knob. (Sigh...) Timing is everything...

The Rickenbacker M8 Amplifier finally arrived.

The M8's I am familiar with all have 8 ohm speakers. I would be grateful to hear of any variations. Thanks!

Thanks for the info, Tracy. I have no reason to believe that my M8 would be any different than the M8's you are familiar with. I'm guessing (?) mine is a late-50's model (ser. no. T6257).

In any event, now I can go forward with ordering an 8" speaker from WeberVST.

I have a M-8 that I bought that has a black and white speckled finish. It has a speaker wit ha number of 395532. Can anyone tell me the make and year by this code? The amp has a serial number of T5227. Can anyone tell me the year by this information?
I need to buy another speaker because mine has a hole in it. Maybe I should spend the money on getting the original one reconed. I guess I would need the speaker manufacturer to get the work done.

David: I believe you are referring to a 6AV6.
The schematic for your amplifier is here. Do you see a number on the tranformer that you can give us?

Thanks Pete for the schematic link. There is an ID plate on the side of the amp cabinet that has the ID of T5257. I couldn't see a number on the transformer. I might have to take it out to see it. Maybe that ID plate info will help figure the year of this amp. Do you have any information on the speaker numbers. I looked on a speaker code listing and didn't see any speaker manufacturers with the first three numbers of 395...

I found a two sets of numbers on the transformer from the inside of the chassis. The number is 25B70330 and under that is AL 5136. Do you know a good place for replacement capacitors etc. Do you know what speaker came in the amp originally?
