I'm wondering here, the "lead" which I'm guessing is played by Harrison, but could easily be played by Lennon is played on what kind of guitar.
Sounds kinda Rickenbacker to me...
I can pretty much get the same sound out of my 370 if I want...

If it's Paul, won't it be his '65 Casino? There's pictures of him using that during the Revolver sessions - it could be that double tracked. Alternatively, if he hadn't got rid of his Fender Broadcaster it could well be that, but I'm going for the neck pick up on the Casino.

I have to question the accuracy of that web site. It's a well known fact that Paul played the Ric on "Paperback Writer" & "Rain". The site claims it's a Nu-Sonic??!!
The site also claims that on "Something" and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" Paul played the Hofner. On both of those tunes Paul plays high on the neck and the Hofner played out of tune high. I find it strange that Paul would use a bass that he knew would play out of tune when played in the upper octaves.

I think that if you read "Revolution In The Head", which is a very accurate resource as to songs it mentions that the guitar part is varispeeded and double tracked which could produce a more bell like Rickenbacker ish tone. I certainly don't think it's a Rick 12 - it's never been known as a Rick 12 tune and indeed Harrison's Rick seems only to have turned up on the demos of "And Your Bird Can Sing" (it's last recorded use) - the tone is a bit too mellow for a Rickenbacker 360/12 but fairly good for a P90 fuelled Casino. Given that that was Paul's main guitar for the sessions (and also John & George's), I think it's fair to assume that that's a more likely candidate. Also, bearing in mind that Macca described "If I Needed Someone" as "that jangly thing", I suspect he would be very unlikely to let Harrison use a Ricky 12 on one of his showcase songs - remember, this is a period when Mc Cartney was starting to take over playing solos - Taxman, Another Girl etc...

...that and it appears from the start that Mac and George Martin considered this a very special song. I have wouldn't be surprised anyone but Paul and Ringo played on it. It sounds to me like Mac's picking and timing. Maybe on this, his birthday, he might clear things up for us? Paul, are you lurking about?

I just bought the Ian Macdonald book "Revolution in the head", fully revised and updated edition 1997 (Pimlico edition 1998) , but, nothing about varispeed etc. Is a new updated edition out now?
I am a bit disappointed about the book...

I heard a cover version of it the other day...very cheesy, but it was done in 3/4 time (except intro)...that worked very well. Good idea if your playing a wedding and someone wants a waltz!
