Hi Mark--I was going thru Tony Bacon's 'The Bass Book' and was looking at the photo of Sir Paul's 4001S...when it was refurbished in the '70's did you guys install a new-style treble pickup?? In Bacon's book the bass now sports a horseshoe magnet pickup, but with a new-style cover/bezel (y'know, without the scalloped front edges).. I wonder was it done by Rickenbacker recently or Paul's guitar tech??? Was it an improvement on the sound of the bass?

Mark: After reading your report on John Crowley's website, apparently he just removed the horseshoe portion for a time after it was done....(?) and was re-installed at one point...maybe I just answered my own question..?! Image ..I just figured in '76 it would have been a new-style treble pickup...

The pickup is a re-issue or an old one that was found .

We (the crew that worked on it ) made up an overwound pickup and that is what was in it for years. This pickup gave a very good balance to the original neck pickup.

In his never ending quest for the ultimate tone /setup he has changed the bass again. On the cover of his 'Greatest Hits' CD/LP that is in black and white (the photo) All of the mods we did are stillthere except the nut /zero fret thing that he had re-installed .
