Hey Jeff.....

I may have missed this from way back...why do you put the 5th tuner on the "bottom" side of the headstock?

because that is the only place it will fit in without filling and redrilling ... the D and G string tuners are far enough apart ... the E and and A tuners are not ...

I think the 4003s5 headsock is too big ... the 4003/4004 headstock has enough room for 5 or 6 or 8 tuners if you are willing to fill holes and redrill ...

I prefer to do minimalist mods ... change as little as possible ... try to keep the original look and feel and vibe of the Ric bass as much as possible ... I also want the changes that I make to be as elegant and graceful as possible ... and reversable whenever possible ...

Thanks for the re-direction Jeff. I think that the 5th tuner on the bottom looks so natural, adding to the 'factory' look. Although now-a-days I am primarily a guitarist (out of necessity), I have always considered myself to be a bassist. My first Ric was a new 4001 in 1978 but my 5 Ric guitars are complimented with a fireglo 4003. I would kill to try one of your 5 strings, but living in the UK, it is hardly likely. I am assuming that you are in the US (I might be wrong). Who knows, I might make it to the US one day & knock on your door. I am seriously impressed!
