On page 41 of the current BP mag, he speaks very highly of his '72 4001.

Hm... Very fine shots. Interestingly, only the treble pickup on that 4001 is being used. And what's that white thing hanging from the E tuner? The original hang tag?

Yeah, looks like a price tag. Just his sense of humor to leave it there. There's also an autograph between the pickups which I believe is John Entwistle's.

I thought it was blood from his thumb.
There was an article a number of years ago in bassplayer rag about his "oddball basses" and he had a 4003 included which had been given to him by Geddy Lee, it kind if ticked me off to see it included with his wierd looking Japanese POS basses.

Les Claypool is the front man for Primus. It's VERY percussive playing Like FLea from the Chili Peppers but on steroids. His songs are fairly "angry" but he's extremely talented. Defnitely worth a listen for the bass playing alone.

This out to put to rest the myth that you can't use a Rick for slapping/popping.

I can't listen to it for long periods but I do enjoy it.

I stopped listening to corporate radio about 12 years ago. So his name is familiar, as is the name of his band, and I've probably accidently heard their music. But I'll take Supergrass or Polyphonic Spree anyday.

Bob - I remember that article. I could be wrong, but I think it was Alex Lifeson (possibly after some drinks) who gave Les a RIC bass - not the one in the pictures posted above.

Yeah it was Alex, and the one he gave Les was a Mapleglo if I'm not mistaken. I'll hafta dig out that article.

I kinda figured Les would take to a Rickenbacker bass at times, especially an older one with the bridge pickup cap in there. He likes those really nasal, twangy tones.

I recall the article which I believe was in Bass Guitar magazine. I actually think the bass was white, I could be wrong though, he also gave him a big trophy from some auto race.
