I don't know ,I'm sure that Terry Gilliam does not know ,nor does he care and as it has absolutely nothing to do with Rickenbackers .....why is this even posted you ask?
I don't know ...I'm tired (in Seattle it is Midnight and I have been up since 5:00am)and I still think that question is funny some 25 years later.Thank you M.Python.

Perhaps it COULD be Rickenbacker-related...
Given the "Orange County" proximity, perhaps we could look at the San Juan Capistrano Swallow?

It's not the air that affects swallow speed. Air is weightless. Well, most air is.
What can affect air speed is swallow size/girth. A fully inflated swallow has a larger body or, if you prefer, fuselage. Ergo, more mass to move through the air meaning more wind resistance meaning a slower air speed.

Let us not forget the density of the air being travelled through....Let's say your swallows flew at, like, Lake Tahoe or something as opposed to the Everglades...they might not have to work as hard.

Alright, Alright! What's all this, then?
I'm afraid this topic has gotten entirely too silly. It started out well with a reference to Mr. Gilliam (a talented chap - for an American), but now it has gotten completely off track. I mean, those aren't even PROPER smiley faces are they? Not the nice big ones like Captain Biggles makes - no sir! Well, it's time to put a stop to this. Begin a new topic on my cue... WAIT FOR IT!
CUE!
