DVD Format UK vs US/Canada

If I order a DVD set produced in the UK, is it a safe bet that I will be able to view it on my DVD player in Canada. I have heard that there may be a UK format that is not compatible in North America.

I think there is a Region issue with some DVD's. I notice on Ebay, some of the sellers say that their DVD's are only viewable on certain "Region" DVD players. I would recommend checking the documentation on your player before purchasing.

Apparently, UK players are Region 2 and Canadian and I am assuming American DVD players are Region 1. So it looks like the DVD's will not be compatible.

You can buy code-free/region-free dvd players; my wife and I just bought this one:

Plugged it in, hooked it up, and we were watching British dvds in Philadelphia. (If you buy a region-free player make sure it also makes the conversion from PAL to NTSC, as British and North american tvs operate under different standards.)
There are a number of websites posting code-hacks for existing dvd players but I'm not clever enough for that sort of thing.
