Hey Fellas,
After many trials and tribulations I decided to go back to the Bass Pod XT.At least for this week anyway,HA HA.I'm working on my psuedo "Spock's Beard" tone.It really is a nice unit.I'm also using the FBV shortboard controller for it.
Changing the subject, how do you shrink pictures down to post on this site? I really want to show you guys my "Smurf" Rick.

I hear that Spocks Beard name alot. WTF?
I have JASC Aftershot and Adobe Photoshop program in my PC and each has a re size feature in the toolbar menu. I have to keep shrinking proposed upload photos til they are no longer refused as an attachment. I don't do it that often enough to give a super technical answer.
Is your pod a rack mount or the other. Is one preferable over the other?

Spock's Beard is a prog rock band. They are AWESOME!!! I actually met them on their last tour.Their bass player Dave Meros uses a Rick and gets an incredible sound. He used to use a stock 4001 but now uses a very modified 4001 with 4 Jazz Bass pickups! Check out their website at
www.spocksbeard.com.
I use the non rackmount one.The rackmount Bass Pod XT Pro has quite a bit more connections and a few extra features but they are more similar than the original Bass Pod and Bass Pod Pro.The non rackmount XT is also four hundred dollars cheaper.

Dave uses a DigiTech Rp-21d processor for his terrific sound. He used to use this, too:
I think his sound is about the best out there, aggressive and unmistakably RIC. He's a great guy, too.
Jerry, Spock's Beard phase 1 has an early Genesis/Yes type of feel with some Queen and Cheap Trick thrown in. Phase 2 (following the departure of Neal Morse)is a bit heavier IMO. I'd be happy tell you more, let me know.
Brent, you lucky guy, the Beard is my favorite American band, but because I live in flyover country I'll probably never see them. How were they? Was that pre-Snow or FE?

It was the Feel Euphoria tour.I saw them at a little place called the Playloft. I met Nick first, then I ended up talking with Dave for about 30 mins about bass stuff, then I met Al.Dave invited me in to soundcheck where I met Ryo.It was a pretty magical moment for me.I'll never forget it.So you're the one who bought the bass off ebay?

Brent,
Me and Lindsay were "friendly" fighting for the Bass at the time, but we are all fanatics of Dave Meros tone and Spock`s Beard. Just get "V" album from Spock`s Beard and you will understand why we love his Tone so much. Also, "Day for Night", " Kindness of strangers", etc. are also very good examples.

Brent, if you find a good Meros sound on the Pod XT, please post it here. I'm dying to get that sound thru my headphones.

Hi Brent,
Yes, that was me. Or rather, Steph and me as he says; Steph's listed all the classic Beard CDs for someone curious about their music, although I like FE as well. Actually, the concert DVD isn't a bad place to start either.
The bass is interesting: it's an '80 4001, heavier than my other RICs, it's been refinished and refretted, and the fretboard has been refinished in a coating which is much thinner and less sticky than the stock coating. Big neck profile, about the same as my '02 4003. Everything has been shielded with copper foil and, as I mentioned in another thread, the treble pickup has been taped over with a cloth tape. It was (and remains) strung with DR High Beams. You know how it sounds.
I asked Dave to write a letter of authenticity, which he did, but inside the case was a couple of back stage passes from the V tour, a Beard window cling, and Dave's original hand written charts for all of the songs from The Light. Unbelievable! He also threw in the original black pick guard and TRC as well as this beauty:
A long post, but I thought fellow Beard fans might be interested.

That is soooo awesome!!! I've actually emailed Dave a few times and he is always pleasant to talk to.That's neat about the shielding foil.On a whim I used black shielding paint on my 4003 about a year ago.It really seems to work.Glad to hear there are some Spocks fans on this site.Daves tone is truly Ric!

I had the opportunity to exchange conversations with Dave and not only he is a great Bass player with a great Tone, he is also very easy going.
He stated that his Tone is 90% created by his effects, the rest is the Bass, but a 4001 is a great start !
