It's not easy to see, but that's not a high gain. That's what the horseshoe looks like with the 'shoes removed.

But wouldn't the pickup not work with the shoes removed? I thought they generated part of the magnetic field? I'm confused.

The shoes, except in a few rare noted cases on these boards, for the V63 are not magnetized. That bobbin however, is super high output.
Just like folks removed the bridge pickup cover now, they remove the shoes as well.

The original horseshoes were magnetized and couldn't be removed, but that's not the case with the re-issues.
The very early re-issues, made around 1985 or so were magnetized but they are very rare.
