Pinging noise?

I have a 360v64 that i've had a year or so. Intermittently (i.e, can't seem to reproduce at will and isn't constant) i get an interesting, but likely not desireable sound that i can only describe as a pinging sound after i stop playing. It kinda sounds like an electronic metronome (and even pings or clicks at a fairly steady pace). It only seems to occur after i play a song (i don't notice it while i'm playing, but only after the strings stop).

Its a really cool sound, but since i can't control it, i can't incorporate it into a song, and its a bummer at the end of a song when everyone stops on a dime and my guitar starts pinging...

I usually play through a Fender Ultimate Chorus and i thought the problem was the amp (still could be). The other day i plugged into a small Peavey practice amp and after playing for 10-15 minutes, i got the same pinging sound!

I also thought it could be some kind of interference, but i have experienced the sound in more than one auditorium, and the practice amp is at home.

Are there any known submarine warfare parts used in Rics? 8^)

Without looking at this it is tough to figure out what this is .So some questions are in order.

1- how new are the strings?
2- what brand and type of strings are they
3-have you checked to see if the saddles wobble side ways?
4-are the slots in the saddles level with the frets or are they ramped/angled back toward the tailpiece?
5-Are the slots in the nut worn? Are they level or are they ramped toward the headstock?
6-Are the trussrods too tight?

7- Do you have the hospital OB Ward machine that goes "PING" in your amp rack?

Just kidding ,go see Monty Python's movie -'The Meaning of Life' ,you will understand then.

8-are the strings firmly anchored in the hook area of the 'R' tailpiece?

Check these items and then report back ...I can help!

If you use a chorus all the time ,the clock chip may be dying ....that would /could do it .

Yeah, you got to isolate it electronically. Try all your effects out one at a time, then leads etc.
And one other thing, Always look on the bright side of life, at least it waits for you to finish a song.

Cool!
Thanks for the response!

I'll have to check on a few of the questions, but for these:
1- how new are the strings?
>>brand-spanking

2- what brand and type of strings are they
>>Rickenbacker - not sure the type (i'll check), but i looked up the factory default for the 360v64 and that's what i ordered)

Do you have the hospital OB Ward machine that goes "PING" in your amp rack?
>> no, but i do have a shrubbery and i just love wafer-thin mints...

8-are the strings firmly anchored in the hook area of the 'R' tailpiece?
>>i'll check the firmness, but my 360v64 doesn't have an 'R' tailpiece... should it?

If you use a chorus all the time ,the clock chip may be dying ....that would /could do it .

Yeah, you got to isolate it electronically. Try all your effects out one at a time, then leads etc.

>>in the Peavey practice amp scenario, there are no fx (onboard, outboard or otherwise) - just a cable between the Ric and the amp (no fx on the amp other than gain/volume/eq)...

at least it waits for you to finish a song.
>>so far it has! or maybe i have everything cranked so loud that i can only hear it when i stop...

one more interesting thing, it does stop after a bit (~30 seconds to a minute?).

I'll check the other stuff tonight and report back... Thanks again for the help!
