The band, not the emperor:

They're from Scotland, despite the name. I saw them on Letterman about 3 weeks ago and just got around to locating their website. The bassist (Bob, according to the website) played a 4003BT or maybe it just had a black guard added. In the media section, it can be seen in a downloadable video of their tune "Michael", and the latest still pic is from the Letterman appearance.
Never heard of them before, but I liked the song they did.

I caught that too, Dave. I have seen them several times on live TV and the bassist is either playing the JG with black guard (NOT a Shadow) or a FG model. But always a Ric!

They are probably the the most popular new band in the UK at the moment. Bob the bass player has never been seen with any other bass than his JG 4003. He strangely seems to amplify it through an old Simms-Watts Mixer PA head. I reckon it was an experiment that worked out for him. Always sounds good though !

Just spoke with Bob this afternoon at Old Town Music. He was looking at a "58" P Bass. He is a real Ric fan obviously..talented ..intelligent young man from Scotland. I wish I could see their show tonight.

I read an interview with Bob in Bass Guitar Magazine, I believe, where he said that for their first album, he didn't actually own a Rickenbacker, so he borrowed a friend's Ric and also used a Jazz on a couple tracks (one of their music videos . . . I believe "Dark of the Matinee", has him with the Jazz). After that, though, he bought two of his own 4001 basses because he liked them so much.

When I saw them a while back on one of the late-night talk shows (Conan, I think), he was using a Rickenbacker, which caught my eye immediately.
