Hi there. I appologise ahead of time if this matter has been brought up before. i searched the threads but couldn't find help.

I have a very big obsession with the jet-glo double neck bass/guitar which was used in 1973/74 during the tour of Selling England by the Pound. I am trying to understand its construction. basically the problem in my mind is this:

take the individual guitar component, the 360/12 (confirmed, b/c in pics, you can see its semi-accoustic). Look at the shape of the body...it has rounded edges all around...

The 4001 on the other hand, is more boxy, with a clear edge & white binding all the way around.

the double neck has this same shape as the 4001 and its white binding all the way 'round the guitar. How can you change the body shape of a semi acoustic (squaring off the edges) without damage? To add more confustion, the top horn of the guitar is removed, to be replaced by the one off the bass! Are the guitars even the same thickness to begin with? How difficult must it be to luthor a guitar like this...this "beast" as it was dubed.

Oh yes, i'm well aware of TMB...thats the whole reason i've gotten into Genesis...i'm only 20...seen em like 9 times.

Hrmm, i've emailed them about it, but i'm not sure it will be easy to get in contact with this guy who built it.

Wow, what a way to get into a band. Sort of bass ackwards.

My guess is the 360 portion of the beast was a 360/12WB which would account for the squared off front. The luthier probably added some wood in the back to compensate for the 1/4 inch difference of the bass, shaved off the top horn and replaced it with the bass horn which would have been useless anyway and voila! Using the top horn of the bass gives it a nice symmetry.

I think The Musical Box is coming to the Detroit area this week, the Royal Oak Music Theatre. If anyone goes to check it out.....pictures? Info? They are supposedly doing The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

Saw them do it this past Thursday. Amazing.
Also saw them last year do the Selling England By The Pound tour. I actually preferred that. I had better seats. I would highly recommend seeing them to any Gabriel era Genesis fans. Not only does it look like the band but the tones of the instruments are spot on. On the SEBTP tour, the mix was exactly as it was on the Genesis Live album.

This is interesting I did not know any of this. Looking at the pics at the Musical Box web site it appears that the luthier is building their version as a set neck, at least for the bass.

ooooooooH! your right! I've never noticed that and i've seen the pic a few times! Are there ricky nock-offs with set necks?

That's actually mine. I got my specs from the Ric site for current models. I'll have to measure it & compare to my 4001s basses. I don't think body thickness has changed from the mid '60s so they should be about a 1/4 inch off.

Thats really strange! if anything, its the guitar thats set neck, remember, the bassist is lefty...so we see the bass neck in the pic.
