Can Someone Tell Me About This Model?

Found this on Ebay. Owner says it's a 79 4001 that was supposed to be a 4000. I like the finish, but don't know much else about it.

That appears to be a 4000 that was routed out to be like a 4001S. I would ask for under the guard pics before accepting the "done at the factory" assertion. It may well be true. There were, for a time, set neck 4000's but I don't know why. I have never heard any kind of explanation for the alternate construction.

I asked for some pics minus the pickguard. I was hoping it belonged to a forum meber since there will be several more from his collection going up for sale to get another Ric.

Definitely a 4001s. He says it is in the title. Looks like my '77 & '81 4001s basses. He just did some mods (which some people think makes it better). The set neck 4001s basses were 4000 basses with an added pickup and associated controls.

There are some inaccuracies in this article. My basses are represented in it under 4001 when they are, in fact, 4001s models. To my knowledge, all the S models made from about '74 - '82 were set neck. I know of nobody who has a neck through from that period but there are quite a few people in the forum that have set neck ones.

Here are mine from the article:

Is his price out of line?

It might be a little high, but it is walnut which you don't see all that often. All in all if I were looking for a "S" I'd snag it.

I've seen the seller's name before. Are you guys sure he's not a forum member?

That looks like a really nice bass. I have a friend who has a 4000 like this and it is really sharp. (even better than mine)

I recognize the name also, reading his item description, he sure sounds like he might be one of us. Says he has 7 ricks and is making room for a 4001C64.

So it sounds legitimate?

Except for the knobs and pickup surround, which in my opinion, you could actually call an upgrade, I'd say definatley Yes.

This would be REALLY cool as a 4000

Yes, I'm a forum member. And yes the bass is very legit. I actually am kinda hoping that it doesn't sell and then I will know it will remain a keeper.
The pictures are an injustice. I call this my Rootbeer Rick!
