For my 18th Birthday (some 15 years ago) I was bought a plain red 4003, with black trim, the serial number starts YF. Can anybody give me any more information about this model. ie. Model number, how many were made, how much it is worth today. It's still played regularly.

Thank for your help

Adam.

While the balance of probability is that it is a 4003, there are other possibilities based on the June 1985 date of manufacture for this instrument. There are some 4001 basses in the Registry with serial number beginning with the prefix F. Please email or post a photo.

Wouldn't it have "Model 4001" or "model 4003" printed on the truss rod cover? Did they stop doing that? My 75 4001 has this.

So, if there is no model name on the cover, it must mean it's a 4003?

Not necessarily, it could be a 4001. Easiest way to tell is remove the name plate and check what type of rods are in it.
Thin flat bar between the rods is 4003.
Thick aluminium bar is 4001.
And lastly 1 x truss rod equals fake!
