My New 4003

Seven years ago i had to sell my 9/77 ric 4001 due to my 3rd child & a new mortgage. So recently I bought my son a Yamaha RGS 121 & have been helping him here & there, but I'm a bass player at heart. I finally said merry x-mas to myself & ordered a 4003 in midnight blue. It should be here by wednesday & I'm chompin at the bit.
I was wondering if there are any problems with the new ones or anything that you Gods of wisdom might suggest that I do to it. I was so happy to find this site & Thank You for accepting me in.

Hi Cody,
Welcome too the forum, you'll have to post some pics of your new Rick when she arrives, congratulations, and as Jeff says, play the hell out of it, they're built for it.

No problems to warn you about. Enjoy it when you get it. I have a '97 Midnight Blue 4003 that is my main gigging bass and wouldn't part with it for the world. It's a wonderful color combo.

The new 4003's are great, better than the 4001's in my opinion.

I agree-although a 68 flamed FG w/full width MOP, checkered binding, clear thunmbrest, split tailpiece, horseshoe-no neck problems...
oh-oh...

Of course there will always be exceptions. 4005,4002,4000,4001S,4080,,,,,I do think the newer truss rod system and pickups are superior though.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
How COULD you prefer a ---3 neck to a 60's/70's 4001...!?

Dont get me wrong, I love the old 4001's, and all vintage basses for that matter. But....I also appreciate modern improvements that enhance construction and playability.
I've said it many times, "I am a player first and a collector second".
A mint, rare, vintage 4001 is useless to me if it has a warped neck.
If I cant play it, and enjoy it, I dont want it.

JWR,
Did you trim that in black or buy it like that?
