4000 Series case

I have a 4000 series case in which the bass moves when closed. You can feel the bass "flop" around as if it is too narrow for the case, when you place it on edge. I put the bass in my other bass case of the same type this does not happen. It is almost as though someone at some time has put a larger bass in the case and damaged the insulating material. I was going to buy a new case, but thinking on it as the bass has already received some finish damage, (most likely in shipping), this seems to be kind of a waste to me. However it is annoying whenever I pick up the bass in its case. Does anyone know how hard it is to replace the insulating material and what is used, or should I just throw it away and get a cheap aftermarket case or gig bag ?

is this the tolex covered case or the molded SKB type?

I always wrap and pack a bass inside the case when I ship. Even with the glove-like fit of the SKB, I would add some padding at the ends. You can probably alter your case to get a better fit but it would be easier to get an SKB or one of the newer tolex cases that fully surrounds the instrument with padding.

Yes, a few guitars I have received in the past have had extra padding added to them, that is a good idea. Were I to ship anything in this case I would definitely have to add padding. The problem with it now it that it is almost useless in protecting the bass, besides having a "annoying clunk" when picking it up. I guess maybe I should just get a new case and turf it.

It definately sounds like the case has been damaged. Buy a new one and sell the old one. What model bass do you keep in the case? The 4004, for example, has bit less wood and may not fit as tightly as a 4003.

It is a 4004L, but it fits fine in my 4001V63 SKB case. I don't think I would sell it as I wouldn't want to see it damage another bass. However I agree a new case is probably in order.

You are an honorable guy Brian. Maybe it would be ok for closet storage or some other application where you would not be taking it out of the house.
