MANOWAR

Remember them? I was watching a VH1 special the other day and the topic was really bad metal songs or something like that. Anyway, ManOWar was on and the bass player was playing a 4003. Aweful song and the Ric didn't make a difference.

Actually he is a very good player (extremely fast and creative pick style BUT his tone can be awful at times and as a band they can be somewhat clownish). His Ric is heavily modified with new p/u's, electronics and nasty looking stainless (or aluminum) pickguard. I'll see if I can find a pic........

That's a good candidate for Mike Parks Hall Of Shame!

That is a waste of a beautiful '71.

They also wore loincloths...maybe to distract from the instrument mutilation!

To further illustrate my rather eclectic tastes I love Manowar, in all their Spinal Tap-esque glory. And Joey DeMaio is indeed a very talented player (although admittedly someone you'll either love or hate; a conventional bassist he isn't)! I'll take him over Billy Sheehan anyday(although Billy's a great guy). I fact when I first saw Manowar 20 years ago I was knocked out by the fact that he was doing pretty much what I was trying to do at the time only much better than I was. Although he did have a fair headstart on me....he's actually a very nice bloke too; I've met him on a couple of occasions and he was kind enough to send a taped reply to a letter I sent to him all those many years ago discussing all things bass.

The bass in question has been through so many changes you wouldn't believe it. In terms of what it looks like, Joey isn't exactly someone who I would regard as a traditionalist; given that his band dress as Vikings I think the last thing he worries about is whether or not his scratchplate (pickguard) is period correct (as I'm sure you can tell from the picture!!) The first time I met him he was using strings gauged 40,50,60,70 and had around 5 pickups on the bass (I still have details somewhere); the strings were all grouped closely together on one side of the neck too. All I can say is anybody who thinks bass ended with Duck Dunn steer well clear....(no disrespect intended to Duck by the way!)

Maybe it's best that the guitar was put out of it's misery...

I just wrote BP a letter about their Simon Gallup/Cure article where he not only mentioned his Rick but his T-Bird as well!
I think Gallup is real underrated & it was nice to see someone talented in that mag instead of some nu metal clown or pop punk dweeb.

Absolutely no disrespect taken Chris; I know most people either detest them or find them hilarious (or both!). I just find them extremely entertaining, in the same way as "Jason & the Argonauts". And they do actually play with quite a large twinkle in the eye; I think people miss that. BTW, the Arnie quote was meant re the bass, not me!I'm sure that thing has at least nine lives...
