I just spoke to the guy. The inlays aren't crushed pearl. They're more like the current ones. This one must have been right near the end of the full width era. Still a great price though.

No kidding? Wow. I never knew they did ones that were full-width that were not crushed pearl. Learn something new every day!
(Wishing they had stopped AFTER MJxxxx!)

Around March and April of 73 the inlays begin to get that way. They had just about run out of the MOP. There,s usually a hint of it still there, but it,s more block like. Still the full monty...

Here's a pic of the full width MOP markers on my April 73, 4001.

Those are wider versions of the standard resin with pearlescent powder markers. I did not know this was a possible transitional feature.

Ted, is there an "easy" (and I know it isn't easy, any way you slice it) way of widening existing markers to look like that? I'm assuming there would have to be binding removed, etc.

I'd have to take some measurements but just a guess, I think the upper corner of the newer inlay would stick out a bit past the line of the upper leg of the old style inlay. I could be wrong though. I will measure it up and let you know. It might even be possible to do it without disturbing the binding (much). The side markers are made from sticks of plastic or nitrocellulose that go in about 1/4". If the inside end was pushed around too much it could disturb the binding and / or the finish.

Here's a pic with no flash to show what the material looks like.
