I need Pick-ups; Factory or Rewinds? Horseshoe?

Hi! Remember me? You all helped me in deciding to restore my '82 4003 with tung oil and Hipshot tuners. (You guys rock, by the way.)
Anyway... I need pickups. I would LOVE a toaster neck and a horseshoe bridge, but is that even possible? RIC says I can order pickups from them, but horseshoes are not on their parts list. Does anyone make them, fake them, or otherwise produce them? If not... Is the best option buying new ones from RIC, or are there better rewinds from Sergio, or some other Bobbin-Master?

Toasters are readily available either new from a RIC dealer or from Ebay. There are a few toaster auctions running right now, I think. Horseshoe pickups are another story. Are you looking for the true vintage style horseshoes or the modern reissue type? Both are hard to get but not impossible.

I am currently selling a vintage type horseshoe that I made here back in August as a proof-of-concept project. Actually, I made two at the time but the other is already sold. My second project pickup is presenly listed on Ebay and ends Friday. You can make one yourself but it will cost a few bucks to pull it off.

4003 modern high gains sound nice on a 4003 ... kinda like they were designed for each other ...

Well, Mitch, if you can afford to wait a couple of weeks I'll be able to lend a hand. Please let me know which type of horseshoe pickup you are looking for, the original or the reissue, and whether or not you'll be wiring a treble-pass capacitor in line therewith. Please note that I can only supply the pickup proper (=coil assembly), not the horseshoes, which I'm sure our own Jared will be willing to help you with. As for the toaster pickup, no information is required. However, you'll have to find yourself a cover therefor, as I haven't got one I can spare.

I think I want the reissue, higher-gain model. Unless I find a rewound vintage that's higher-gain. The point is, I can't be a purist with this bass, so I'm not gonna sweat it. Whatever I can get, I will make work.
I have an original '69 Ampeg SVT head and an Ampeg 4x10" cab... So it's hard to make ANY pick-up sound bad! =)
Ted... I've had your eBay horseshoe booked marked since it was posted! But... Like I said, I'm not a purist so maybe it should go to someone who needs it for their '74 4001 project. What do you think?
Sergio... I have time to spare, so I'm all for frankensteining a horseshoe with you and Dr. Jared.
I'm thinking I'll buy the toaster from RIC since I'm trading in my old truss rod cover.

No problem. I did not know if you knew about my project pickup. I built it mostly because I wanted to find out if it could be done and because had the parts on hand. The first one sold for a bit over $400 but if you add up the costs of the parts and my time to build it, I lost money on the deal. Making one is not cheap but it is the only for sure option for someone who really wants one.

When I re-read your auction, I got all excited about the '70s higher-gain bobbin and I will DEFINITELY bid on it. Although, if it get's close to $400, I will graciously bow out and buy a lap-steel and begin my apprenticeship under you.

hey Mitch,
if ya want aluminium horseslippers (gotta becareful of the copywright po-lice) ya gotta wait in line. Its rainin and AC welders + water = XXX
if you want carbon steel-that's a h_ll of a lot easier...
