At risk of being banned from this forum, I would like to ask the following question: Have any of you noticed that Rick's smell great? My 335 has a great natural wood scent to it. I was playing a new 360 at a store today, but I didn't dare stick my nose to it, fearing that I would have been arrested or something. Just tell me if I am odd.

OK, you're odd[lol]. No ,but really, sounds like Rick-o-Smell at work again.I personally do not believe the smell coming from a new Rick case has to do with the natural smell of the wood. It's more likely the lining in the case, combined with out-gassing of the still fairly new finish, and, the infamous Rick polish cloth.MMM, I Love those flannel polish cloths and that smell!!

Nothing beats the smell of a Rickenbacker in the morning....

Since you mentioned it, the brand new case that I bought for my 4001 has an interesting smell to it. It remindes me of "attic must." It's that smell of something that's been sitting for a while in someone's old attic (or basement).

My new 340/12 has the Ric-O-Smell, too. I believe it is mainly the polishing cloth. I have ordered two more - one for my Fender Strat. To me the smell is a cross between chocolate and expensive furniture polish, but it certainly adds to the Rixperience. It definitely helps me remember to stop and smell the Ricks along the way. I recently bought a slightly used SKB (Rickenbacker) case for my '68 370/12, due to the original case's tired condition..The only thing that was in it was the key packet w/key..It had what everyone refers to as 'Rick-O-Smell'. I must admit it felt like I was getting a new guitar, and the case is really cool; absolutly NO movement whatsoever and almost the protection of an ATA-approved flight case. So I guess it's the case that has the smell???

I don't think the SKB cases smell the same as the vintage silver ones. But an awful lot of the "smell" Is the case.

Dr.: Yep; Hofners also have a distinct smell when they're new as well...It must be something used by the factory, for I remember by 4001CS smelling the same way when it was new (1992); the smell has faded a good bit from the CS but I can smell it on the 370/12 from just letting it set in the case!!

It's what all my friends say when I open the case:

"Eau, de Rickenbacker"!

New smells are great, but mine is from 1966 and has that great Rick smell. A bit of attic? Definitely some -- but more like "Vintage Rick-Wood." Don't they sell it at Macy's? Maybe I could get a job at NAMM spritzing passers-by at the RIC display.

Well, it ain't the rags!!! I got my two polishing cloths today. They were both sealed in plastic. When I opened one it smelled like stale tobacco odor. The smell must be in the case lining after all. My bad! Image
