That is a slick looking axe!
BTW, other than the neck being able to handle more tension, what's the differences between a 4003 and a 4001?

"... other than the neck being able to handle more tension, what's the differences between a 4003 and a 4001"
Different neck construction to handle more string pull, but more importantly, different truss rods. The 4001 had the
compression/expansion type, the 4003 has the more familiar compression rods.

the 4000 series bass has evolved since the 1950's ... various changes in neck design and pickups and slight body shape changes ... but the main difference is the 4003 has hotter pickups and a stronger neck ... the 4001 bass was stressed beyond its design specs simply by putting round wound strings on it ... although most of them handeled these strings fine some didn't ... some people prefer the 60's models ... some 70's models ... I like the 1986 and later basses ... but the old ones are pretty cool ...

That is indeed Andy's bass(formerly mine!!), and I can vouch for it being almost pristine!! I would have already bought it back, but you see, I bought this 4005......$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
It is close to being in the same condition as the one I bought from Kendall(remember him?)

Maybe the guy will take the 4005 in trade with a little cash to sweeten the deal for him!
