Yeah, definitely a 1973 high-gain. Pan head screws for polepieces, larger magnet, squatter bobbin. Not a 1968 pickup by any stretch of tne imagination.

This is the swami of "basspalace.com" fame. Apparently, he is selling off a bunch of parts. He always thinks he has something exciting...

Yep, that is a 70's transition pickup. I am pretty sure that only horseshoe pickups were being installed in '68.

the September 1968 4001 that I owned came from the factory with a horseshoe pickup ... I don't know the exact date they started using high gain pickups in the 4001 ... but it was later than September 1968 ...

The October 73 4000 I have doesn't have the slotted polepieces on the pickup. Does that mean it has a later replacement pickup ?

One of our own on the Forum has a 68 4001 with a factory orig. high-gain, although the pole pieces were the screw-type, not buttons IIRC....

Hey, Brian, I believe the pickup on your 4000 is original to it, as by late 1973 all the 'old' 4001 appointments, namely block binding, full-width fretboard inlays, cruddy bridge, toaster pu in the bass position AND transitional high-gain pu in the treble position, had been discontinued.

Thanks, that's good news as I'm pretty happy with the sound of the bass as is. I won't bother to look for a "transition" pickup and install it then as I would probably change it back anyway if I didn't like it as well. I'll try to post some pictures later, but as I use the pickup cover I may have to remove it for the pickup to be seen.
