Fretboard finish/unfinish?

Everything that I have ever read says that most companies including Ric has put some sort of finish on the fretboards. If for nothing else to 'protect' the wood from absorbing moisture, sweat etc. If indeed that is true, then why would John Lennon's '58 not have had a finish on it? Why would it have been released from the factory with no finish?
Just curious...

And speaking of unfinished fretboards . . . what's the best way to get rid of the grime that seems to absorb into the fretboard of a 650 Dakota?

Try very fine steel wool

Fretboard cleaning and treatment is varied from brand to brand .
I remove lots of finish from Rick fretboards for customers. They prefer the bare wood.
After I do that the wood darkens to some degree. It gives you more of the original Lennon look.As per his 1958 model 325.
If you like the Dakota look ,you might try mixing a little urethane and tung oil ...I believe that is what the factory uses ...you can rag that on!
To clean the crud off before you do anything ,take some 4/0 steel wool to the fretboard.Cover the pickups before you do this as they will collect particles of the wool .It won't hurt anything ,just look fuzzy.
Personally .....I'd leave the board wooled, then take a wad of NEV'R DULL magic wadding (this can be had /purchased at hardware stores) ,wipe it across the frets ,then take a sponge and some Johnson's Paste Wax and wipe the fretboard with that.Let it sit for 5 minutes ,then rub it out .That gives you a great look and the fumes are minimal.Plus it feels great .
Don't you love it when it feels great?
