If anyone is interested, Motor City Guitar
http://www.motorcityguitar.com/ now has a C64 Fireglo in stock. Looks very nice and the neck is slimmer with a better feel IMO than the three 4003's that are next to it. it is priced at $1799 but keep in mind that they have a price gaurantee that includes all stores, catalogs & Internet sites.

It is time for a little road trip to actually play one of them ... I think they are less than an hour north from me ...

Ken ... I went there today ... very cool old style music store ... they had 4 ric basses on the wall ... I got to play a 4001C64 ... very nice bass ... but I couldn't palm mute ... that damn mechanical mute from hell thing was in the way ... the neck is a little slimmer and had better resonance than the 4003 basses ... but it is like $700 more than a 4003 ... the horseshoe pickup has very similar properties to the 4003 high gain ... except you can't remove the cover ...

Those shoes are non-magnetic, aren't they? If so, you can remove them.

I thought you could remove the shoes from the V63 and if so, why wouldn't you be able to take them off the V64?

True enough Joey - I don't think they're different horsehoe pickups in the V63 and C64, so you should be able to remove the shoes without affecting the tone significantly. I prefer to remove the pickup covers on my 4001/4003's but can't seem to do it on my V63. Aesthetically it just doesn't look right to me - I guess I'm a fashion victim!

the whole point of a horseshoe pickup is to have the horseshoes ... instead of removing them just take out the pickup and put in a high gain ... also in person the reverse headstock is nice looking ...
but you know me ... I was checking out to see how I could convert it to a 5 string bass ...

Does anyone know if the horshoes affect the sound of the pickup or are they purely cosmetic as they aren't magnetized?

If there is an effect, it is minimal.
