Pyramids are my favorite strings for newer basses and TI Jazz flats for older 4001's....

I had a look on the RicsRus website £20-50 a set! Is that right? Seems a tad more pricey than I was expecting, are they gold plated?

They are not gold plated, but hand made, even with with cloth string wrapped around the end (very helpful BTW to hold strings in place with the R tailpiece). I really think they add to the sound and make my rics sound more "woody", with more pop. They also are quite durable. The cost may also be that they are rare in relation to other brands. I have never been able to find them in France for example, even in NYC, it was hard !

I like Pyramids but they don't seem to be very durable.

I'm trying a set which I bought from Mike Smith at RicsRUs. Haven't put them on yet. They are expensive strings wherever you buy them & I have seen them more expensive (&no stock) & Mikes price does include p&p. It's got to be worth the price for one set, just to see what everybodies going on about. I change my strings every week on my main players, so these pyramids have got to last a bit longer than that.....we'll see!

Well, I finally shut down my cheapness long enough to invest in some Pyramid strings ($66 for 3 sets, medium flatwound, on Ebay). I took off the old Gibson flatwounds and slapped the new Pyramids onto my 1980 360/6 and they've been through one gig and 2 practice sessions so far (using a VOX AC-15) ......

I'm NOT disappointed. Right out of the package you can tell they are really well made. But the proof is in the sound and I'd say there is a DEFINITE improvement. But how so you describe sound with simple text? I expected to get a more jangly sound but instead what I'm hearing is MORE SUSTAIN, and a more pure and full and rich sound than I was getting. Kinda like going from a "plunk" to "boinggggggggg" if that makes any sense at all.

Anyways, I'm a convert. At roughly 3 times the price of regular strings I think they are WELL worth it. For me it'll be nothing but Pyramids from now on.

Interesting, Kent. I would have bet on the flat wounds having a more 'muted' sound - maybe that's what you mean by 'rich'. Certainly that's my experience from the 'old days' (Fender chrome 'flatties' as I recall). Glad you're happy with them - rock on!!

Howard, there's no comparison between the Fenders and Pyramids, but you knew that...

I have changed my mind about them also I've had some on now for a significant amount of time and they still sound great. They can really cut through the mix also if you want that. I have also gotten good sounds out of Fenders and they also last forever, but the tension is really high on them, Pyramids do sound better though, much more clear.

Bob, how would you compare the Pyramids to the TI's? I've used the TI's for years, but never ponied up the dough for the Pyramids.

Yep, Paul. I'm gonna buy the Pyramids but I'll try the Rick 95105s on first. I've only seen Pyramids available at one place in Melbourne. Best I get down there and see how much - if they charge for strings like they do for Ricks I'm up for a bucket load (they charge $60 for Elixir Nanoweb acoustics - great strings, mind you!! Other places charge $45).
