Yeah, I like them a lot better with two pickups.

If you can't see it it's a 4004L with Dark Star pickups added.

reminds me of a Guild starfire.

Oh, when I went there I saw the Lemmy photo, I've also seen the 4003 with Dark Stars on it.
I thought the same thing, looks like a Guild Starfire, Fred Harmon who makes them (I believe) is the moderator for the Guild forum over there.
Looks pretty cool though.

IIRC Norris (Hillsidebass) was looking for a good bass that would be suitable for trying out the Dark Stars. Then Dude had something he wanted more and they traded.

The Dark Stars are single coils (despite the look) based on the old Hagstrom-made Guild pickups of the mid-1960s through about 1971. Rick Turner hotrodded the originals for Jack Casady and Phil Lesh, and the Dark Stars are built the way Rick modded them.

They have been well-received, and the sound clip on Fred's site sounds very nice. But they're Guild-syle pickups, I don't see the fascination with trying them out in other basses.

Each to their own.

I don't particularly dig it. Why can't he be content with the 4004's awesome humbuckers?

If he wants a single-coil Ric he should go get a 4001S/4003S.

I think it looks OK....not something that I would do. I like when people modify their Rics to suit their needs (a whole different topic/can of worms).
