A few things...
Is it true that Harrison gave the famous painted SG to Clapton?
And he says he used it on Day Tripper...

I think it's more likely he's "on" something.

His story is bogus.

Yeah, George was definitely in possession of "his" SG all during Clapton's Cream era and later gave the guitar to Pete Ham of Badfinger. Unless George gave Eric a different SG...

On top of that, Ed's claim that George used his SG to play the riff on Day Tripper is pretty dubious, too!

The thing is I've never read of George having two SG's.

I was talking to this guy that is sure that he got the SG painted and then gave it to Clapton.
Also says he can nail the tone of Day Tripper with his SG... I say it's a Casino (from the other multiple Day Tripper threads).

The thing is I found some other things on the internet about Harrison giving Clapton the SG. But I've never seen anything about that anywhere's before.
I'd think the BeatlesGear book would mention this if it was a fact.
Also I checked some Eric Clapton FAQ and it didn't say he got it from George.
But still he says that Harrison must of have two of them and gave one...

Yeah, I've never heard of him having two SGs, either. The story is probably a mishmash of facts and assumptions:

George and Eric played the same model SG, I believe, although George's had the vibrato. And I don't think that George was photographed with his SG much after Clapton began using his. Plus, The Fool did a lot of work for the Beatles during that era. And George was known for giving away guitars and in fact he *did* give away his SG, but later, and to a different person.

Mash em all together in a blender and there you have it: George gave Eric his SG, as painted by the Fool!

(PS - I think the DT riff's a Casino, too!)

George, from what I've read didn't have possesion of the SG to a few months after Day Tripper was done in the studio and unless he used McCartneys Epiphone, it wasn't the Casino either. He and John didn't get theirs (Casinos) until '66...DT was recorded in October of 65. Harrison did have a Gibson ES345 but not sure if he used it during the session.

An ES345 would pretty effectively split the difference between a Casino and an SG! That would make sense.

Both George's and Clapton's SGs had the Maestro vibratos. Rundgren's the one that changed that tailpiece to a stop tailpiece and Schaller tune-o-matic. I make replicas of these among the others I do and I've researched Clapton's pretty heavily.

The promo film for Day Tripper shows Harrison with his ES-345.

Maybe george bought 2 cause he liked it so much.....its not that absurd considering lennon bought Dylan a J-160E cause he loved it so much....Maybe that would explain why clapton gave george lucy.....as sort of a payback

Read what Ed has to say about George Harrison's "Black" CG:

"George's original Country Gentleman was brown. Many people (including myself) thought it was black.
After all, we all saw the Beatles on Black & White TV. Plus, brown isn't a very Rock N' Roll color.

George only had one SG. He gave it to Pete Ham in 1969, and the Harrison Estate bought it back at auction earlier this year.

Clapton recently got his painted SG back from Runt, who was planning to auction it before Clapton stepped in.

The part of the anthology dvd on the beatles describing "The Beatles" recording sessions has GH's SG all over the place which dates from the summer of 1968. While my knowledge of cream is limited, I think that eric was using his Fool wigged-out SG by then.
