Guys,

Just got a new toy or two this weekend, an Ampeg 410HLF 4x10 cabinet and an Ampeg SVT350H solid state head. 350 watts.

Man does this sound good, especialy with the 'ol 4001. Real Clanky.
What do you think?

I've never played through an Ampeg. Image At least with my own bass. Sounds like I should look into that. I did use an Ampeg combo with a single 15" using another guys P-Bass one time-actually that rehearsal is what prompted me to get back into playing bass.

I have an old Carvin 300 watt head that to me is the best sounding head I've owned. When going through a single 15" I get a tone that reminds me of Tony Levin's sound on old King Crimson and Peter Gabriel tracks (where he's actually using a bass), like "Sledgehammer".

The old Carvin, alas, is a back up amp now, it has to have some diagnostics/repair done to it. I have a Behringer 300 W head now, which is good for the $, but not the cleanest sound. I usually play through a Carvin 2x10 cabinet, but sometimes through the 15" bins on my Fender PA system. The 2x10 plus a 15 is a nice sound...

I've been wondering about a 4x10", or maybe looking for a 2x12", and would like to get the Carvin head fixed so that the rare case of my son and I needing an amp on the same night has a better solution than nursing the sick Carvin amp through by turning it off frequently. A couple of smaller cabs offers a little more flexibility and ease of transport.

Years ago I had an Acoustic 402 (2x15") cabinet that was SWEEEEET. I had a cheesy 100 W Yamaha head then, which allowed me to push some air. I eventually sold that rig to an old man who played electric piano...it was a BIG cabinet, but sounded nice. Would be a hoot to have one of them AND my 2x10". Image

I use Marshall Super Bass 100s with a mixture of Ashdown BlueLine 1x15s and 4x8s, and sometimes I steal one of my dad's SVT-810Es.

2x10's are the way to go in my opinion. Small, powerful and portable. Easy to store as well. If I need more power, I add another 2x10 ! I'm finished with lugging huge cabs around, there is no need these days. Most of my small club/pub gigs are played with the one Ashdown 2x10 on its own. It very rarely gets put through the PA.

As I mentioned to Jaymi a while back, a Cheyenne with an Ampeg rig will have bottom end for the ages. It's a bit warmer than a 4003 and can be really thunderous at high volumes. It's a good combo to use if you like Gene Simmons' work.

My cheyenne has been thunderous through WHATEVER amp I have had to use along the way....Ampeg is the biggest but the others I have tried have not left the bottom end behind.

With my Beatles trib band I use a Roland DB700, 250w, 1-15"+horn. Done up in Vox livery(looks like a Vox Foundation cab). Has programmable preamp settings which are handy when using a Hofner, a Ric, and who-knows-what for the 3rd set.
With my original-music band I use an Ampeg Rocket Bass100. 100w, 1-15".
