Ric Tone

Im relatively new to Rics so bear with me guys. I have a 2002 4003. Recently i got a 2004 4003. My question is , I thought they would sound pretty much the same. Upon playing the 2004 at rehearsal I noticed that it has more of a growl than the 2002. Not that I mind the difference in tone with the 2002 being warmer and less of the growl. In fact Im glad they differ a bit. My question is why the difference. I do know that basses will mature, if you will over time. Is this the case. Id like some of your input. Thanks.

Differences in pickup height, strings, and even the wood can effect the overall tone. I have 13 Ricks and no two sound exactly alike.

wood ... in every bass the wood is unique ... also Ric pickups vary ... there are pretty similar but not identical ... then setup ... I was playing one of my basses and it sucked ... then I noticed it needed a winter truss rod tightening ... then after the adjustment it sounded much better ... strings ... newer strings sound better ... and not all strings are created equal ... and like Ted said pickup height ... also the nut height ...
and like Ted said no two rics are not alike ...

Setup is soooo important. You first need to decide what you want in tone and then go from there.

Thanks alot for the input. Both have had thier winter set ups and new strings. The one that is growlly has GHS Boomers 45s and the other diaderio 45. I love that they sound different. Its nice when I play acoustic gigs with the warmer one and the rock with the other. Ive played alot of different bass in the past few years but nothing comes close to the tones I get with my Rics. Should have bought one right off the bat. Thanks Again.
