I'm suspicious of the neck PU (were 73 still using toasters?), the tuners, and the TRC. Seems a 73 should have "Model 4001" clearly visible...

Opinions?

It looks ok to me. The general construction is ok. The hardware seems right. I think you would be more likely to find hi-gains on a '73 than a toaster.

OK...I'll take your word. What type of tuning pegs are those? Very different from my 75.

They are the older style Grover tuners. From what I understand, they weren't very good. Slipped out of tune a lot and the backs had a tendancy to fall off. I think they're usually found on mid '73 and earlier models.

I thought the same thing about Grovers but JH said they were pefectly fine except for some later ones that where made in Asia but they could be fixed.

I've had no problems with them, I've had two basses with them.

That guy must have sweat a lot, look at the finish wear on the body where his arm hits it...

Oh another thing that made me wonder was the talk of buying it a few months ago for $1300 and putting it on the Bay starting at $500. I see it's up to $635 now...but $1300 with no case?

Anyway, if it's legit then I had an educational experience! Image

That is not the original TRC, that is the only thing I see about it that's not correct, it's got the old small headstock.
