Jim: I am from the middle of the country and well north of the Mason - Dixon line so I probably have more of the nasily midwestern sound than a southern drawl.

Only teasing Ted, I'm always surprised when I hear people say that all Americans have the same accent. You're right a Chicago accent is way different from a Southern Drawl, or a Minnesotan hurty flurty ..... !!!

No problem Jim. I imagine that we do sound a bit strange to other english speakers. A lot of american dialects are the product of one immigrant group teaching another to speak english. The Polish side of my family learned english from the Irish, German, and Italian immigrants who settled in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood before them. We still carry the vocal inflections of all of those ethnic groups. American english is a bit of a language stew. I have never figured out the source of the southern drawls though. Most of the settlers in the southern states were British but drawls are quite removed from any British dialect I have ever heard.
